Tale of two posts (on social media) - 13/06/13

Image
T wo recent incidents on the social media caught my attention for the disparate source of origin but both becoming ‘trending’ topics immediately One was the blog written by anonymous group of people regarding a bad experience in a pub (Lemp Brewpub & Kitchen, Gurgaon) & the other about a POV article written by Mahesh Murthy (popular figure in the social media space and digital marketing circles) regarding the circumstances that led to the suicide of a bollywood actress, Jiah Khan. One thing for sure, both became trending topics, the Lemp incident becoming viral on Facebook and Twitter (was trending topic for few hours) and soon mainstream media picking it up and publishing on their sites.... the other, post by Mahesh, was being liked, shared and commented upon in hordes... (which also included disappearance of the original post). The post evoked strong reaction - for & against, from the readers a personal opinion While the buzz around Mahesh’s post was not surprising, fo...

Lessons marketers can learn from "why this kolaveri di"

Some of my thoughts on Why this kolaveri di phenomenon. With over 24 Million views on the original video, (plus an equal number of views on the various versions of it)this have become a true viral/meme case-study from India. No more reference to the Microsoft-Pankaj Udhas 'viral' or any of those 'foreign' case studies. Added to it are dedicated Facebook pages and millions of search results trying to bask in the glory of WTKD (including this blog :D) If one looks in deep, this song had all the makings for becoming a viral success. Any digital marketer could learn from the success of WTKD song. Here are some of the recipes that went into making this an success: Simplicity: A song with least common denominator English words regularly used by the youth with couple of simple vernacular words... the song has the universality of nursery rhymes like, Twinkle, Twinkle Little star.... or a Johnny, Johnny, Yes Papa.. With no music knowledge required, little wonder anybody ...

UNESCO ANNOUNCES INDIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM 'JANA GANA MANA' AS THE BEST NATIONAL ANTHEM

Image
I have got this forward. It made me proud that our national anthem is getting recognition it deserves. However giving little thought made me wonder why would UNESCO get into a country's pride... Every country's National Anthem is the best national anthem for its citizen... so the whole thing about being awarded the best national anthem sounded far fetched.. Searching the UNESCO site did not give me any information in this regard... Also the google search (keywords: UNESCO, JANA GANA)gave about 5000 results and mostly it was directed to blogs and groups.. nothing to a credible source of article... I guess, this is a hoax mail that is going on... The award is a FAKE... but its viral effect is for REAL Cheers Santosh
